Jesse E. Cates, age 84, of Marion, IN, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Marion Rehab in Marion, IN surrounded by his family. Jesse lived in Grant County and was a farmer all his life.

He was born in Marion, IN, on July 1, 1930 to the late Charles E. Cates and the late Ethel (Powell) Cates. Jesse is survived by his wife; Esther (Small) Cates, whom he married on May 13, 1951. Jesse and Esther celebrated 63 years together in May 2014. Jesse was a member of the Mount Olive United Methodist Church, where he attended all his life. Jesse was a trustee, was on the Administrative Board and was very active in the church over the many years he attended.

Jesse served three terms on the Oak Hill School Board, was active in Fellowship of Christian Farmers, was a member of the 20th Century Farm Club, and was on the Board of Directors of the Grant County State Bank. Jesse enjoyed traveling with his family and close friends, especially wintering in Florida. He made walking sticks as an evangelistic tool for The Fellowship of Christian Farmers.

He is also survived by two sons, Ron (Teresa) Cates, Marion, IN and Jim (Becky) Cates, Ft. Wayne, IN.; one brother, Lester (Georgeanna) Cates, Marion, IN.; and one sister, Mary Cook, Marion, IN,; two grandsons, Jason (Lori) Cates, Swayzee, IN; Brian (Angela) Cates, Marion, IN; two granddaughters, Kristi Cates, Normal, IL, and Amy (Rich) Vail, Ft. Wayne, IN; and eight great-grandchildren, Lucas Cates, Grant Cates, Rebecca Cates, Collin Cates, Elayna Cates, Adalyn Vail, Cora Vail, and Lilia Vail.

Jesse was preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence Cates, Russell Cates, Charles Cates, Robert Cates, Arthur Cates ; and two sisters, Velma Wolfe and Waneta Collins.
