Jerry L. Simler, 77, of Freeport went to be with his Lord, following his long courageous battle with cancer Thursday, August 14, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Born April 3, 1937 in Freeport, he was the son of Eddie and Harriet (Spielman) Simler. Jerry married Sharon M. Bocker, on September 30, 1967 in Adeline. Jerry served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1959 with the Seabees. He worked for Garman Construction and Civil Construction from which he retired in 1998.

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the VFW Post #998 and AMVETS Post #32. Jerry loved to spend time with his grandchildren going golfing with them, attending their events and taking family vacations to the Smoky Mountains. He was an avid bowler and golfer. Also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and going to the casino. Surviving are his loving wife Sharon of Freeport, devoted children Anita (Greg) Bicksler of Ridott and Michael (Jen Maves) Simler of Freeport. Cherished grandchildren, Rachel and Bryce Bicksler, Brennan Simler, Rachel and Becca Maves. Two sisters, Virginia Jonas of Rockford, June Miller of Freeport. One brother Ronald (Lynette) Simler of Hillsboro, OR. Numerous nieces, nephews and his beloved dog Princess. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Robert, Jim, Dale, Richard Simler and a sister Joyce Shade.
