Gerald “Jerry” Garvin was born in Norman, Nebraska, July 25, 1935 to Josephine Ellen (Boyle) and John Leo Garvin. He departed this life on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska.

Jerry received his formal education attending country schools and then graduated from the Campbell, Nebraska high school with the class of 1953. He worked with his father on the farm and then worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot. He later was employed in construction work putting a pipeline into Red Cloud.  At the conclusion of that project, Jerry went to work farming for Wallace Vance.

He was united in marriage with Sharon Adler on December 8, 1956 at the United Methodist Church in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with four children, Kevin Duane, Monte “Bubba” Dale, Becky Sue and Bradley Mark. Jerry worked helping farmers in the area until they moved to Fairfield where he worked for ten years farming and feeding cattle for Ralph Kissinger. They returned to Webster county and purchased their own farm southwest of Inavale. In addition to the farming operation they also ran a small dairy herd. In addition, Jerry drove the milk truck for the cheese plant in Red Cloud.

Following a three-year drought, they decided leave the dairy business and Jerry supplemented the farming by working at the Val-Co grain elevators in Inavale and Riverton. He concluded a 30-year career in the elevator business with the Koch Elevator in Franklin. After leaving the farm they moved into Red Cloud where Jerry was in charge of the maintenance for the Red Cloud Housing development.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing as a member of the church choir. In his leisure time he relaxed by fishing, hunting, listening to country music, watching John Wayne western movies and reading Louis L’Amour novels.  He was an avid Husker fan and liked to pitch horseshoes. His greatest love and enjoyment in life was time spent with his family. Jerry especially looked forward to holidays playing a game of cards right after their family dinners.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Josephine Garvin, and his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Cindy Garvin.
