Jeanne W. Furst Jeanne W. Furst, 96, of Freeport, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Parkview Home.
Born Aug. 28, 1911, in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was the daughter of Harry and Lillian (Bell) Whitman. She was raised by her grandparents, Frank and Sarah Whitman. Jeanne and Charles W. Furst were united in marriage in 1933 in Michigan. He died Aug. 30, 1986.Jeanne led a life of intellectual curiosity and care for others. A World War II volunteer, she met troop trains.
She was a Red Cross First Aid instructor, and tutored students in Latin and English as a second language. She was one of the founders of the Jane Adams Mental Health Clinic in 1966.Her interests included music, art, literature, travel, food and education. Her memberships included Grace Episcopal Church, Amity, Shakespeare Society, Girl Scouts, YWCA, Freeport Public Library, Children’s Home and Aid Society, and Freeport Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Her last years were spent at Parkview Home where she appreciated their fine care.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet (John C.) Grant of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Allison Goddard of Rockford; one son, Frank E. “Ned” (Harriet “Hapsie”) Furst of Freeport; one brother, Franklin Whitman of Petoskey, Mich.,; one sister, Caroline Green; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; one brother, Harry Whitman; and one sister, Elizabeth Melpolder.
