Jean R. Miller, 89, of Sharpsburg, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at Kline Hospice House, Frederick, after a lengthy illness.

 

Jean was born in Jennings, Maryland on September 13, 1933, to the late Ernest and Leota (Butler) Handwerk. Leota died of scarlet fever when Jean was 9 days old, and Jean was subsequently adopted and raised by her maternal aunt, Della (Butler) Warnick and her husband James G. Warnick of Akron, Ohio. A 1952 graduate of East High School in Akron, Jean married the late Luther L. Miller on May 26, 1953. They were married for 46 years until his death in 1999. In addition to being a housewife, Jean worked for more than 25 years as a Fiscal Clerk for various Maryland State agencies, primarily in the Division of Correction, retiring from Roxbury Correctional Institution (Hagerstown) in 1995.

 

She is survived by her son, Lance L.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Carl Warnick, killed in action in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII; Edward (“Butch”) Warnick, Ray Warnick, Emmons (“Hank”) Handwerk, and Roy Handwerk; one sister, Dorothy (“Peg”) Gillis; and sister-in-law Margie Hetrick.
