Long time Cocoa Beach resident Jean Abel Menges departed this world peacefully on May 11, 2014. Appropriately, she was surrounded by family on Mother’s Day when she died.

Born to Joseph B. and Gladys H. Abel on January 20, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jean grew up there and attended Peabody High School. She married the love of her life, Edward H. Menges, also a Pittsburgh native, on June 12, 1941.

Jean and Ed moved their family to Cocoa Beach in 1963, where they had many friends and enjoyed entertaining.

Jean’s faith was simple and strong. It served her well throughout life, including her final hours.

She was able to live independently in her home of over 50 years until now, something she treasured dearly. The family would like to thank the numerous individuals who made this possible, including Donna, Brendan, Howard, Dion and many helpful neighbors. The birds at her feeder daily will certainly miss her attention!

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Elizabeth A. Taylor (Robert) and son Edward H. Menges, Jr. She is survived by brother Joseph B. Abel (Pat); daughter Carol M. Lee (Bill); sons Jay H. Menges (CeCe), Tom A. Menges (Dawna), and Richard D. Menges as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
