Jean Fulcher Fesperman, age 94, of Pittsboro, died Friday, March 3, 2023, at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living.
Jean was born in Iredell County, North Carolina on May 19, 1928, to the late Henry Emmett Fulcher and Stuart Snead Fulcher. She grew up in Davidson, NC, where her father was on the faculty of Davidson College. After attending Davidson for two years, she transferred to Women’s College UNC (now UNC Greensboro), graduating in 1949.
Jean worked for many years as a medical technologist and retired from Mission Hospital in Asheville in 1985. In addition, she was always active in her children’s schools and in the community, caring for others from the very young to the elderly. After moving to their beautiful mountainside home Barnardsville, Jean was very proud of tutoring 4th and 5th graders.
Jean loved the beach, both family trips to North Myrtle Beach (a tradition that continues) and quiet time with Bill. She also loved the mountains and was hard pressed to choose a favorite.
She and her family attended Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville from 1974 to 1985. She and her husband, Bill, helped to found New Hope Presbyterian Church in Asheville. Her volunteer church activities included singing in the choir, being a Sunday school teacher and a member of the session, and whatever else needed to be done. She and Bill attended New Hope until their move to Pittsboro in 2013.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, William Boyden Fesperman, and her brother, Henry Emmett Fulcher, Jr. Surviving relatives include sons James Fesperman (wife Jane Clunie) and John Fesperman (wife Leslie Fesperman) and daughters Kathy Brown and Martha Spradley (husband Greg Spradley). Her grandchildren are Charles and Philip Monnich, Rachel Fesperman, Thomas and Katherine Fesperman, and Shelby Spradley. Jean’s sisters are Frances Olsen and Martha Montgomery.
