Jean Sarubbi, of Newington, passed away on January 1, 2022. Born in Hartford on August 22, 1928, she was the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Sullivan) Bowers. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, John Sarubbi; by her twin sister Patricia Davis; her infant sister Barbara; and her brothers Howard and grew up in Hartford and Bloomfield, attending the St. Joseph Cathedral School and Bloomfield High. She was one year old when the stock market crashed, and the Great Depression shaped her childhood memories. As a teenager during World War II, Jean watched her older brothers and their friends leave for Europe and filled scrapbooks with news of the war. She said that when FDR died, she thought the world would end. Instead, the war ended and she graduated from high school. In 1949, Jean and her brother’s friend John married, started a family and built their home on Sunset Road in Newington, CT.A homemaker while her children were young, Jean volunteered for community groups including the PTA and Scouts. She went back to work in the 1960s, holding various jobs in the Newington School system. Her favorite was the last, at John Patterson Elementary School, where she worked in the office, mothered the students and made lifelong friends. Jean and John were avid hikers and campers throughout their marriage. After retirement they traveled across America twice, as well as to Italy. Jean made a special trip to Ireland in 2017, visiting the town from which her Sullivan great- grandparents emigrated in was a wonderful role model for living well. She was a lifelong learner who over the years outgrew her diffidence and became eager for adventure. She loved to cook and was fearless about trying out new recipes on guests. For many years she took great joy in meeting with her crafting group and singing with a senior choir that performed at local nursing homes and schools. She was a talented knitter and voracious reader who loved doing jigsaw puzzles and watching Jeopardy. She was also a dedicated swimmer who trained for a mile-long charity swim at age 80 and kept fit doing laps in her friends’ pool. What made Jean happiest was time spent with people she is survived by her daughter Nancy and son Felix, and their spouses Paul Osgood and Carol Sarubbi; her beloved granddaughters and their spouses Lisa and Dennis Boba, Dana and Joshua Trotta; and her precious great-grandchildren Freya Boba and Owen Trotta. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, who were dear to her and treasured her as the last of her generation. Nancy and Felix would like to extend special thanks and deep appreciation to cousins, friends, and neighbors on Sunset Road – the village that embraced Jean, loved her spirit and made it possible for her to live long and happily in her family home.
