Janet S. Stevens Janet “Jan” Stevens died Monday May 12, 2014 at the West Bend Care Center. Janet Sue Stevens, the daughter of Henry and Pearl (Ludwig) Mertz was born November 4, 1932 in Ottosen, Iowa. She attended country school in Wesley Township, graduated from Algona High School in 1950 and the Iowa States Teachers College with a 4 year elementary degree. She was united in marriage with Earl Stevens on June 5, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Burt, Iowa. The couple spent a short time in Burt before moving to West Bend where they spent their married lives. Jan taught 2 years in Burt, 1 year in Bradgate and 28 years in the West Bend School District. Jan loved teaching her school children and her retirement years with her husband. Jan and Earl were blessed to spend many winters in Mercedes, Texas. She loved planning meals and banquets for large groups in Iowa as well as Texas and was always quick to volunteer with the church and many events in the park where they wintered. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Earl of West Bend,IA, sons, Scott (Cathy) Stevens of West Bend, IA and Shawn Stevens of West Bend, granddaughters Allison (Jordan) Den Hartog of Urbandale, IA, and Janelle Stevens and her fiancee Jesse DeGeest of Altoona, Iowa. Jan was a member of the United Methodist Church, the West Bend Historical Society and served as “street captain” for the neighborhood where they wintered in Texas.
