Janet S. Canarecci, 53, of South Bend, passed away on Friday December 27, 2013, in Golden Living Center, Elkhart, IN.

She was born on June 24, 1960, in Longview, WA, to the late John Henry and Alvena (Beeler) Schmokel. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Schmokel.

Jan is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Ara) Ajizian of Medford, OR; her son, Joseph (Andrea) Canarecci of Mishawaka, IN; an adopted son, Kirk Ruff, Jr of Tuscon, AZ; two step-daughters, Kimberly Canarecci of Waterbury, VT and Heather Canarecci of Cheyenne, WY; five grandchildren, Victoria, Calister and Harper Canarecci and Calvin and Oscar Ajizian; her sisters, Linda Nowicki of South Bend and Cynthia Konarski of Morganton, NC; and by three brothers, Charles, Thomas and David Schmokel.

Jan began her career as a Realtor, which led to mortgage lending and finally onto teaching continuing education for her profession. She later owned her own business for graphic art design called, Lighthouse Illuminations. Jan loved the fine arts, which showed in her gifted writing and the many years she sang and taught others around her to sing. She loved gardening and watching things grow, people included. She cherished deeply her relationship with her granddaughter, Tori and was immensely proud of the thought of being a Grandma to all of her other grandchildren. She was a loyal daughter, who took care of her Mother in later years.
