SOUTH BEND – Wally Hammond, 71, loving husband, Dad, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 4, 1942, in Muscle Shoals, AL, to the late Wallace and Ella Hammond. On June 5, 1987, he married Sharon (Starkweather) Hammond. She survives, along with sons, Johnny Hammond of St. Joseph, MI, Jim Hammond of Niles, MI; Donnie (Joyce) White of Anderson, IN, Bart Bush of South Bend, and daughters Debbie Hammond of Pensacola, FL, Kim (Tom) Gustafson of South Bend;13 grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; a sister, Donna Fisher; and a brother, Tom (Brenda) Hammond, both of Niles, MI. One brother, Freddie Hammond, and sister Regina Hammond preceded Wally in death.

Wally worked as a truck driver before retiring in 2002. He was a superintendent of Signal Point and Plym Park golf courses. He enjoyed all sports and coached little league for many of the children and grandchildren. In 2005 he received the annual Service Award from the American Cancer Society for volunteering his time for transporting cancer patients to and from their treatments through the Road to Recovery program.

He will be remembered by many for his thoughtfulness and love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren (Paw-Paw’s Posse). He was a great story-teller and had a knack for remembering dates and phone numbers.
