James W. Gillam
December 10, 1917 – December 2, 2012
James W. Gillam, of Bay City, passed away Sunday December 2, 2012 at Bay Shores Nursing Center, age 94. The son of the late Fred and Mary (Howell) Gillam, he was born December 10, 1917 in Bay City. James served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in northern Michigan during which time he met his future wife, Beatrice. On October 11, 1941 James married the former Beatrice M. Craven and she preceded him in death on May 25, 2012. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving until the end of WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient. James was a machinist, starting at Defoe Shipbuilders and retiring from Saginaw Grey Iron Foundry. He was also well known as ‘Jim the Barber’ and owned Gill’s Barber Shop on Litchfield St. He was a member of First Baptist Church. James was a member of Wenona Lodge #256 F.& A.M. where he served as Master three times, and was also a member of the Bay City Consistory. He enjoyed fixing engines, wood carving, hunting and fishing, and keeping up with the latest in technology, even using his iPad up until a few days ago.Mr. Gillam is survived by his children, William & Carol Gillam, Greg & Linda Gillam and Jill & Ed Barlow; grandchildren, William, Sarah and Luke Gillam, Michael Gillam, Hilary Woodworth, Kristy Ann Brown, Justin Gillam, Melissa Ragatz and Lori Durance; 16 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Lois Craven, Vivian Jordan and Meroa Curtis. James was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
