James Stewart Grant, 85, of Raleigh, NC, formerly a resident of Woodbridge, CT, husband of the late Ruth Alice (Dietrich) Grant whom he married on September 7, 1947, passed away on Friday, July 31st at Sunrise Assisted Living in Raleigh, NC. Born in Barrhead, Scotland on December 24, 1923, he was the son of the late David Anderson Grant and Barbara (Stewart) Grant.

Jim served as a Sergeant in the Army during WWII, and then attended the University of Connecticut where he received a B.S. Degree in Engineering. He was a retired engineer from IBM where he had helped design and make the first computers at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY, including the computer guidance system for the SST jet plane and the airline reservation system for United Airlines. Some of his works can be seen on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. He was an avid golfer all his life and he and his wife were avid square dancers and loved traveling

Jim is survived by two daughters, Pamela Allen and her husband, Stephen, of Celestine, IN, and Cheryl Avery and her husband, Larry, of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Jennifer Pacheco of Chicago, IL, and Paul Allen of Fort Wayne, IN; three great grandsons, Spencer James Allen, Parker Knox Allen, and Hunter Stephen Allen; a brother and sister-in-law, John & Helen Grant of Windsor, CT; six nephews and one niece.

Besides his wife and parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Alex Grant.
