James Michael Stewart, 64, passed away surrounded by family and friends on January 31, 2017, with his favorite jazz track (“Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis) playing in the background. He was born in Roswell, NM in August 1952 to Katherine and Vernon Stewart, in a military family. He learned the value of hard work and fastidious bookkeeping from his father. He learned unabashed love from his mother. He lived in England as a young man, and then spent most of his adult life in Albuquerque NM, finally settling in a home along the Bosque, a place where God lived, he liked to say. Michael studied the arts and enjoyed film making, poetry, jazz, wine, and fine cuisine; but he could also delight in a good Rex’s green chile cheeseburger. Michael was introduced to the stock market in his early 20s by a family friend. He demonstrated a natural ability in that field, pursuing a 30-year career as a financial advisor, for which his combination of intellect, intuition, and hard work found a perfect outlet. The brightest part of Michael’s life was his two sons, James Matthew Stewart and Jackson Cole Stewart. His role of father was his greatest achievement and treasure. The unconditional love he felt for his boys was the purest love and joy in his life. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Stewart. He is survived by his mother, Katherine Stewart; his sister, Carolyn Stewart and husband Phillip Goetze; his niece, Cathryn Starr; and his nephew, Kevin Cox. Quoting William Carlos Williams, one of his favorite poets: “As birds’ wings beat the solid air without which none could fly, so words freed by the imagination affirm reality by their flight.” Godspeed Michael, beloved father!
