Jim, age 71, with quiet dignity gave up his four-year battle from metastatic colon cancer. Born in Maui, Hawaii, Jim was gifted to parents John and Sarah Foss on Feb. 22, 1950. Growing up in Maui he enjoyed Island life to the fullest, surfing being his biggest passion along with hiking craters and pineapple fields. Jim graduated from Punahou High School, attended Oregon State University at Corvalis, completed his business degree from University of Hawaii at Manoa. His career began with Diamond Parking in Honolulu, later being transferred as the general manager to Anchorage, Alaska. He met his wife Beth on a blind date, in 1990, and the adventure began. Jim had a passion for the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, backpacking and cross-country skiing. His dream was to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. In 1995, with one year old daughter, Scarlett, Jim and Beth packed up the motor home to travel the U.S. while Jim embarked on his lifelong dream. His dream became reality in October 1996, completing all 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail.

Returning to Alaska, Jim started the next chapter in his life as the founder of Best Inspection, specializing in residential and commercial building inspections. His son, Jan, continues to run the business. Jim never gave up his zest for the outdoors. He became involved with his son, Jan, in completing his Eagle Scout Achievement Award with the Boy Scouts of America.

So much life gone way to soon, Jim is preceded in death by his parents; and sister. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Beth; daughter, Scarlett; and son, Jan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at 1 p.m., at Main Event Grill in Anchorage.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Jim’s name to the Fleming Arboretum, 101 Makawao Ave, Makawao, HI 96768; or the Boy Scouts of America.
