James M. “Jim” Thacker, 84, of Elkhart, passed to his rest Wednesday, Oct. 19, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 19, 1932, in Louisville, Ky., to James W. and Virginia (Yates) Thacker.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry, whom he married May 8, 2004.
Also surviving are his children, Cheryl (Joe) Leffler, Debbie (Kevin) Waller and Kevin (Gloria) Thacker, all of Louisville; six grandchildren, Brittany Thacker, Samantha Thacker, McKayla Thacker, Heather Waller, Nikki Waller George and Mathew Joel Thacker; three great-grandchildren, Dejuan Thacker, Bryleigh Thacker and Amayah Leffler; five stepchildren, Dana (Tammy) Bowlin, Dereic Bowlin, Blane (Joyce) Bowlin, Bryce (Jeannie) Bowlin, all of Elkhart and Brindel (Dan) Bryon of New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Morris Thacker.
Jim graduated from Manual High School in Louisville, where he played baseball all four years. He then pitched for the Philly organization for one year.
Jim worked at Tube Turns as a grinder in Louisville for 37 years.
He also served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1954.
Jim enjoyed reading the Bible and watching western movies. Jim was a longtime member and greeter at Life Tabernacle Church.
