James M. Egan, 58, of West Hartford, the loving husband of Jolene (Carlson) Egan, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a very brave battle against cancer that came to an end much too soon. Born in Hartford, son of the late James E. Egan and Kathleen (Murphy) Egan, he graduated from Northwest Catholic High School in 1973 and lived in West Hartford for most of his life where he raised his family before recently moving to Newington. James served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal (CV-59) from 1973-1978 before becoming a boiler engineer for the past 20 years at Trinity College. James loved watching his favorite sports teams. He always stood by his Dallas Cowboys, and was an avid Red Sox and Trinity College Baseball fan. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, James had an amazing sense of humor and positive outlook on life. In addition to his beloved wife Jolene, he will be dearly missed by his daughter Colleen Egan Stewart and her husband John, who was truly the son he never had, of West Hartford; his granddaughter Olivia, who was the light of his life; his brother Tim Egan and his wife Debbie of O’Fallon, MO; his sister Patricia Fordyce and her husband Bill of Bolivia, SC; his nieces and nephews, Sean, Danny and Katie Egan, Josh Castner and Lauren and Matthew Fordyce; and his canine companion Dhalila; his uncle Francis Murphy and his wife Marian, as well as his cousins that were more like siblings, and their families. He was also extremely excited to meet his second granddaughter who is yet to be born. The family would also like to acknowledge Jim’s two lifelong friends, John Pelow and John Landers, who have been constant companions and a great source of support to Jim and his family during his illness.
