James “Jim” Bays, age 74 of Palatka, passed away Friday, September 3, 2021, at his home after a long illness. He was a native of Ashland, Kentucky, and had lived in Palatka since 1995, coming from Orlando. Jim retired from Kmart Stores as a regional Garden Shop manager in the Orlando area and upon moving to Palatka he went to work at the Palatka Kmart store for a few years. He also worked part-time at Publix until his second retirement. He was the quiet, sweet face of Publix for many years. Jim was a US Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and loved photography, gardening, and jogging/walking the Ravines.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years Frances Pruitt Bays of Palatka, who he adored and supported in her various talents as a painter and shop owner. He is also survived by several family members including his nephews and their families along with many cherished friends. The family would like to thank Haven Hospice. Also a big thank you to Jim’s “at home” care companions: Shawn, Kim, Angela, Melody, and J’on. Also, special thanks to Dr. Solomon and his nurse Vicky. Jim considered them all family.
