James “Jim” Harvey Viser died peacefully on Thursday, March 21, 2024, after a long illness at the age of 76. He was a native of Charleston, SC, and a resident of Suffolk, VA for 28 years. He was the son of the late James Harvey Viser, Jr. and Annie Lyle Miller Viser. He was predeceased by his sisters Lyle Viser Turnage and Jan Taylor Viser; and his nephews Taylor Turnage and Jace Herring.Jim was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He loved singing in the choir and fellowshipping with his choir friends. Jim enlisted in the US Army at 18 years old and served in Vietnam. Then he went to work for the federal government at the Charleston Navy Base where he worked logistics for nuclear submarines until the base closure. He then moved to the naval bases in Maine, Washington State, and finally to Virginia. He managed logistics for the entire East Coast fleet until he retired from the federal government after 43 years. One of the loves of his life was working with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Jim started with the BSA Coastal Carolina Council as a Scout Master and a member of the Training Council and then the BSA Colonial Virginia Council where he served as an Assistant District Commissioner.Jim is survived by his wife Elizabeth B. Viser of 23 years; sister-in-law Dorri Smith (Jarrell); nephews, John Turnage (De), Will Herring (Annelise), Greg Smith (Katie), and Andrew Smith (Kadie Sue); nieces, Annalyle Andrews (Chris), Emilie McCombs (Will), and Macy Herring Turner (Travis).
