James “Jim” G. Gasta
November 18, 1937 – February 20, 2012
James G. Gasta, of Bay City, passed away early Monday morning February 20, 2012 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Saginaw, age 74. The son of the late Clinton & Irene (Jeffrey) Gasta, he was born November 18, 1937 in Bay City. Jim graduated from St. James High School and attended Western Michigan University. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Jim grew up as a 3rd generation milkman and always considered himself a milkman. In 1971 he started Jamie’s Drive Thru Dairies in Bay City and was also the owner of Jamie’s Dippy Whip. Jim has continued to work in the business through his retirement until he became too ill. He enjoyed small game hunting and fishing and was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the N.R.A. Jim was involved with the Evening Optimist Club and has always been very active and generous in the Bay City community.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Marie E. Ehmcke, and their five children, Christopher Gasta, Eric (Carrie) Gasta and Jamie (Tim) Weiss all of Bay City, Chad (Julia) Gasta of Ames, IA and Jeremy (Stacey) Gasta of Sarasota, FL. Jim was a loving “Papa” to his 10 grandchildren, Rachel, Justin, Jacquelyn, Nolan, Brandt, Morgan, Clayton, Sofia, Victoria and Josh. Jim is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Beverly Garwood of Niles, John Gasta of Texas, Douglas (Lenore) Gasta of Bay City and Martha (Dan) Hetherington of Linwood; his mother-in-law, Marge Kazyak of Bay City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe Thompson and Donna Thompson both of Bay City; his lifelong friend and secretary, Patti Pike; and several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dennis Garwood; and a nephew, Tim Gasta.
