James “Horace” Mims, of Durham, North Carolina, born March 26, 1929 to the late George P. Mims and Inez H. Mims, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2018 at the age of 89 at the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital.

Mr. Mims served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict Era and Peacetime. He was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He retired from Durham Parks and Recreation. He was a 60-year member of Masonic Lodge #352 and American Legion Post #7 in Durham. He loved wood working. He was led to the Lord by Dr. Lonnie Graves and made his profession of faith in February 1999.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mims was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 48 years, Bernice H. Mims; his sister, Ms. Aline Mims Durham and her husband, Seavy Durham; his brother, Colonel Hayden Pegram Mims and his wife, Sue Mims; his mother- and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Nathaniel and Fannie Hatcher Harris; his and brother- and sister-in-law Mr. Frank and Alma Murphy; his brothers-in-law Mr. Ray Westerman and Mr. Stanley Seagroves and a nephew, Pastor Michael H. Murphy. Mr. Mims is survived by his son, James Darrell Mims; his daughter, Diane M. Manner, her husband, Bob Manner; his only granddaughter, Hannah Tart, whom he loved dearly, his great-grandchildren, Aayden Tomlin and Valor Hurst; his sisters-in-law Mrs. Margie Westerman and Mrs. Louise Seagroves and many nieces and nephews.
