James H. “Shorty” Detering, 65 of Centralia, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 23, 1952 in Belleville, son of Elmer Detering and Dorothy (Pleitner) Detering. He married Virgilia Kraus on May 19, 1973 at St. Paul’s Church in Nashville and she survives in Centralia.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Virgilia Detering of Centralia, he is also survived by three sons: Roger Detering and wife Christy of Shattuc, Craig Detering of Centralia, and David Detering of Centralia; six grandchildren: Katyln, Rebecca, Allyson, Hunter, Zachary Jaiden Detering, and Genevieve Heimann; four brothers: Don Detering of Harrisburg, Ark., Charles Detering and wife Carolyn of Nashville, Robert Detering and wife Sandy of Mascoutah, and Monroe Detering and wife JoAnn of Nashville; Sister-in-law: Shirley Dickhout and husband Robert of Mascoutah; a brother-in-law: Jerrold Kraus and wife Nancy of Marissa; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law: Virgil and Beatrice Kraus, nephew: Chris Detering, and sister-in-law: Jodene Detering. Jim graduated from Nashville High School.
He worked at Good Year Farm Tire Repair for 4 years, Rockwell for 20 years, where he was known as “Shorty”, and he owned and operated Fleming Cleaners with his wife Virgilia for 9 years. He was a member and a Deacon of the First Christian Church in Centralia. He was also a volunteer Firefighter for the New Minden Fire Department until 1995, a member of the Nashville Sportmans Club in Nashville, Illinois, and Den Leader of Cub Scout Troop 127 in Nashville. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
