James D. Carter, of the Mt. Hermon community died at his residence Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Born July 14, 1923 in Rainelle, WV. He was the son of the late James A. Carter and Courtney Callison Carter. He earned a degree in mining engineering from West Virginia University and worked in the coal industry in WV, VA and KY and later for OSHA in Arlington, VA. He was a pilot in the United States Army Air Corp. where he served in World War II. Mr. Carter was of the Presbyterian faith. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Carter of the residence. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, James R. Carter and wife, Julie of Walworth, NY, Nancy Jackson and husband, Walter of Ringgold, Susan Jasek and husband, Edward of Roanoke, John S. Carter and wife, Shelly of Richmond and Mary Ann Calhoun and husband, Allen of Alexandria. Mr. Carter is also survived by a sister, Jean Maynard of TN and a brother, Bill Carter, of Fl, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother.
