He was preceded in death by his parents, James Shelby Smith Sr. and Mallie Penton Smith, his wife, Mary Catherine Smith, his sister, Flora Smith Terrell, and his brother, Arnold Smith. Survivors include his children, Shelby Jeanette Stockstill, and Gregory Kyle Smith and wife Theresa; his grandchildren, Devin Smith, Arlee Smith, and Donnie Lynn Stewart.
