James Cecil Smith, 82, of 1770 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett, VA died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his residence. He was born on February 22, 1928 in Henry County, VA to the late John Daniel Smith and Lucy Clara Mitchell Smith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara S. Nelson and brothers, Johnie Smith, Roy Smith, Ralph Smith, Donald Smith, Tom Smith and Douglas Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of the Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Martinsville, VA and worked 41 years as general manager of Bob White Chevyland. Also, he was a member of the Smith River Wildlife, Preston Ruritan Club, VFW and the American Legion, Post 11. Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Karen Kiser Smith of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Helen S. Carter and Terry Carter of Bassett, VA; son and daughter-in-law, James L. Smith and Arlene S. Smith of Bassett, VA; sister, Dorothy Smith Ingram of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Robert Edward Nelson, III, Elizabeth “Bess†Kellerman, Kameron Carter, Blake Carter, Haley Carter, Amy Smith, Zane M. Edmonds and Grace E. Edmonds; great-great-granddaughter, Sophie Barbara Nelson; father of step-children, Michael A. Edmonds and his wife, Tiffany Y. Edmonds of Roanoke, VA, Duane L. Edmonds of Bassett, VA and Michelle D. Edmonds of Axton, VA and former son-in-law, Robert Edward Nelson, II.
