He was a graduate of Lake Orian High School in Michigan and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Toledo. Once, he was able to turn a Volkswagen into a Voltswagen, transforming it into an electric car. Always making use of his woodworking skills, he once made a quarter scale buckboard wagon pulled by Saint-Bernards that the grandchildren could ride. The list of wooden items made also includes violins, a spinning wheel, scrollwork clocks, cabinets, and the list goes continues.

In addition to his wife, Sheila, he is survived by one son, James B. (Sandra) Morgan, of Anderson; one daughter, Cassandra Morgan, of Fairmount; one step-son, Nathan B. (Jennifer McKinney) Spaulding, of Elwood; four grandchildren, Abigail and Joseph Morgan, of Anderson, Harley Spaulding, of Carmel, and Avril Spaulding, of Elwood; mother-in-law, Louise Stephenson, of Fairmount.
