Ivan L. Sorn, 96, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Freeport Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after a brief illness. Ivan was born Aug. 18, 1913, in Orangeville, the first child of Charles Henry and Martha Daisy Schabilon Sorn. Ivan married Edith Marion Weber on March 7, 1934, at the parsonage of English Lutheran Church in Freeport. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Carol Ann Sorn Groop, and a son, Charles Carl Sorn. Ivan worked in many different trades before becoming a master carpenter.

He was a 25-year member of the carpenters’ union.In 1975, Ivan and Edith retired to their home on Lake Wisconsin where he lived 25 years before returning to Freeport in 2000. Ivan was an avid fisherman who enjoyed many early mornings on the lake. He competed in tournaments sponsored by the fishing club to which he belonged, and has many trophies for walleye and other trophy fish.Ivan continued to do woodworking after his retirement.

While living in Wisconsin, he built several homes and then began hobby work building many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. He enjoyed showing his neighbors his many pieces along with the many photos of pieces he built for family members. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith in 1995; and his brother, Milton Sorn in 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol (Leland) Groop; son, Charles (Diane) Sorn; three grandsons, Donald (Nina) Groop of Rockford, Erich (Kelly) Sorn of Loves Park and Michael (Kelly) Sorn of Freeport; four great-grandchildren, Brittany Sorn of Freeport and Keelan, Connor and Brody Sorn of Loves Park; his sister, Wilma Fochs of Freeport; sister-in-law, Katherine Sorn; and several nieces and nephews.
