Isabella Norris Hughes was born on December 21, 1924, to the Late Oliver and Carrie Edwards Norris, in Greensboro, NC. She entered the gates of Heaven on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

She was united in Holy Matrimony with the Late Wallace W. Hughes, and to this union was born one daughter, Deborah A. Hughes, who preceded her in death.

Mother Isabella Hughes was a proud, active member of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church for well over sixty years, until declining health prevented her participation. She was in many, many, church auxiliaries and ministries as member and leader respectively. These included the Deaconess and Wellness Ministries (formerly Nurses Guild), Missionary Group #1, the Senior Choir, a faithful member of the Sunday School and Wednesday Morning Bible Study and a Chairperson for (W.O.W.) Warriors on the Wall, Prayer Ministry.

Mother Hughes was also community and civic minded and was instrumental in bringing the first Girl Scout Troop to New Zion and participated in the local Crop Walk, annually. When a group of church members founded the W. D. Johnson Scholarship Fund (though not a member) she was one of its very first fund-raising Captains and collected for the fund each year.

Mother Hughes worked many positions throughout her lifetime as a Nanny, Nurse’s Aide, Laundry Attendant and, also as a server at the Greensboro, K&W Cafeteria. She enjoyed travelling and had journeyed to Israel and experienced many vacation cruises. However, her crowning moment was her return to school at the age of seventy-five (75) and receiving her diploma.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her grandson, Damon Hughes; niece and nephew, Theresa Tapp (John), Tony Hopkins (Yolanda) all of Greensboro; cousin, Bertha Mae Scott, of Bessemer, AL; and a host of additional cousins, nieces, and nephews. Including a dear “Special Family Friend,” Devin Campbell.
