Irvin Mertz, age 87, of Bode died on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Humboldt North Care Center.
Irvin Anthony Mertz, the son of John P. and Margaret (Heidersheidt) Mertz, was born on April 12, 1927 in rural Ottosen, Iowa. Irvin graduated from LuVerne High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Irvin farmed all of his life retiring in 2012. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore where he had served as a Director, Lay Minister, Lector and Parish Council Member. Irvin was a member of the Bode Elevator Board and the Knights of Columbus having served as a Past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Otto-Field American Legion Post #415 of Livermore serving as a long time Sergeant at Arms. Irvin enjoyed bowling, dancing and playing cards.
Irvin is survived by his brother, Eugene Mertz of Bode; a sister, Emogene Burns of Council Bluffs; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
