Irene E. Kimmel, 88, of St. Pauls Retirement Community (formerly of Marine Street in South Bend) passed away at 12:48pm Sunday, January 8, 2006 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend.

She was born on April 2, 1917 to the late Constantine and Frances (Wozniak) Ziarniak in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with her parents (her mother died in 1918); her stepmother, Valentina Ziarniak; and one sister, Isabelle Milliken also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Kimmel was a homemaker and seamstress.

On December 28, 1940, as Irene E. Ziarniak, she married Carl D. Kimmel in South Bend, IN. He died on June 27, 1994.

She is survived by her two daughters, Susan E. (Michael) Foley of South Bend, IN; Carolyn E. Katie (Patrick) Brennan of Kirkland, IL; five grandchildren, Sean (Cindy) Foley, Kerry (Cindy) Foley, Jennifer Brennan, Michael (Mia) Brennan, Timothy Brennan; four great grandchildren, Emmett Foley, Olivia, Maire, and Seamus Brennan; three nieces; one nephew; and many great and great-great nieces & nephews.

Mrs. Kimmel was a member of St. Matthew Parish; Polish Womens Alliance at St. Adalbert Parish; and along with her husband, was very active at Z.B. Falcon Conservation Club. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, bird feeding, and nature. Irene was very creative and talented. One of her fondest accomplishments was receiving her G.E.D. in 1996. She was extremely proud to be a member of the graduating class of 1996.
