Howard Shaver, age 101 of Midland, passed away on Wednesday evening May 9, 2018 at Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. The son of the late Robert J. and Clarabel (Wisner) Shaver was born in Jasper Township, Midland County on February 15, 1917.
On July 31, 1943 in Midland, Howard married the former Lela V. “Dot” Palmerton and after 68 years of marriage she died on April 21, 2011. Howard served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 and the European Theatre during World War II from 1943 to 1945, stationed in England, Belgium, France and Germany. Upon his return from the war, he and Dot bought a farm in Wheeler where they farmed while Howard worked at The Dow Chemical Company. In 1951, they moved to Alma and then in 1957 moved to Midland where they resided in the same house until their deaths. Howard retired from the Service Station at Dow in 1980 after 35 years of service.
Growing up in Jasper Township, Howard started working when he was just a boy. He worked on farms and that instilled in him a work ethic he never lost. In his younger years, Howard enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Dot enjoyed gambling and spent several years traveling to Las Vegas, and going to the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant. After Dot’s death, his daughter, Barb moved in with him, and they spent a lot of time there, making many friends.
Surviving Howard are his daughters, Marty Gordert and her children, Howard, Gregg and Barbara Jo Van Horn all of Midland; Barbara Ann Shaver of St. Louis, MI; 6 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; sister in law, Mary Shaver of Midland. In addition to his parents and wife, Howard was preceded in death by 5 brothers; 2 sisters; son in law, James Gordert.
