Dr. Horace Benner Rees Jr., husband, father, grandfather, friend, passed away peacefully on Oct. 19, 2010 in Aurora, CO, after a long illness. Born in Big Lake, TX on July 25, 1926 to Horace B. Rees Sr. and Margaret H. Rees, he served in the Navy during WWII. After the war, he graduated from the University of Texas and worked as a microbiologist for the State of Texas. He married Helen Hamilton Scott in Flushing, NY on October 16, 1954. He later worked for the U.S. Army at Fort Detrick, in Frederick, MD. While in MD, he attended George Washington University and earned a doctorate in microbiology. In 1966, he began work for the U. S. Army at Dugway Proving Ground, UT until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed his retirement in Salt Lake City, UT, studying French, taking cooking classes and attending opera and classical music performances. His lifelong passion, however, was playing bridge, where he earned the status of Life Master. Horace moved to Aurora, CO in 2001, where he developed numerous friendships at Heritage Eagle Bend. He was preceded in death by Helen, his wife of 45 years and his brother Robert H. Rees. Survivors include his son, Matthew S. Rees of Elizabeth, CO, his wife Heidi D. Rees and their children, Kerrick and Kyleigh Rees; and his brother Thomas L. Rees of Colorado City, TX. His smile and laugh will be missed by family and friends alike.
