Homer S. Johnson, 99, of Moberly, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021. He was born November 22, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa to Homer S. and MaeBelle (Krumman) Johnson.
He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City and was attending the University of Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. As an ROTC student, he was called in to help guard government buildings as the military was preparing for an invasion. He subsequently entered the Army, was assigned to the 501st B-29 group, and shipped out to Guam until his discharge on March 4, 1946.
On August 28, 1947, he married the love of his life, Helen Pitkin, in Anthon, Iowa, and she survives of the home. Helen and Homer lived in Madison, Wisconsin and Des Moines, Iowa before relocating to Moberly in 1971, where he was the General Manager of Wick Homes. He also owned the Double Cola bottling plant, and he and Helen owned the Coach Light, in downtown Moberly, for 25 years.
Homer and Helen were blessed with 3 children, Al W. Johnson(Susan) of St. Louis, Janet Murray(Bob), and Liz Sosniecki (Dale), both of Moberly. He has 5 grandchildren, Robbie Murray(Carissa) of Nashville, Dane Sosniecki (Nicole) of Kansas City, Ian Sosniecki (Alyssa) of Ft. Worth, Sarah Johnson of Columbia, and Joann Johnson, St. Louis.
Besides his wife and family, Homer enjoyed golfing, (serving as President of Moberly Golf and Country Club), American Military History, and telling jokes. He had a wide circle of friends, and continued making new friends throughout his life, all of whom were very important to him. One of the highlights of his later years, was, at 88 years of age, attending Washington D.C. on the Mid-Missouri Honor Flight and seeing the WWII Memorial and visiting Arlington National Cemetery.
Homer served as an elder in the Presbyterian Churches in Madison, Wisconsin, Des Moines, and in Moberly. He was also a dedicated member of both the Moberly Chamber of Commerce and Moberly Rotary Club, and was elected to the Moberly School Board.
