Hollis F. Harrington

May 18, 1923 – November 6, 2012

Hollis Frederick Harrington, 89, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2012 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was born May 18, 1923 in Sheridan, Arkansas, the older son of Fred and Ethel Mayfield Harrington. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert Harrington.

Hollis was a member of First Baptist Church of Hot Springs and the Jordan Sunday School Class. Previously, he was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Sheridan. He was also a member of the Jacob Brump Masonic Lodge #160 for more than 50 years.

Hollis is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Nelson Harrington, who he met in 1941 during their senior year at Sheridan High School. They were married October 28, 1942.

In 1941, after graduating from Sheridan High School, he attended the University of Arkansas and was a freshman member of the Razorback football team until a knee injury ended his football career.

Hollis served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was a veteran of World War II.

In 1947, he began his career at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. He retired in 1980 as Chief of Buildings and Grounds after 33 years of service.

Hollis enjoyed playing golf and was one of the original members of the Sheridan Country Club. He was an avid domino player and he played regularly almost all his life. During the summer, he supplied his family and friends with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and onions from his garden.

Hollis was known for his work ethic, but his family was the pride of his life. He devoted countless hours to his three sons, rarely missing seeing them play football, baseball, basketball, and participating in other school, church, and community activities. Hollis loved to listen to Virginia play the piano and other musical instruments, whether at home or in church.

Other survivors include his three sons, Phil Harrington and wife Karen of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Mike Harrington and wife Gail of Sheridan, Arkansas; and Scott Harrington and wife Teresa of Billings, Montana; his six grandsons, Phil Harrington II and wife Laura of Murphy, Texas; Richie Harrington and wife Heather of Plano, Texas; Jim Harrington and wife Michelle of Concord, North Carolina; Stuart Harrington and wife Randi of Memphis, Tennessee; Grant Harrington of Billings, Montana and Todd Harrington of Walla Walla, Washington.
