“The Measure of a Man”

The measure of a man is not determined by his show of outward strength;

Or the volume of his voice;

Or the thunder of his actions;

Or of his intellect or academic abilities.

It is seen rather in terms of the love that he has for his family and for everyone;

The strength of his commitments;

The genuineness of his friendships;

The sincerity of his purpose;

The quiet courage of his convictions;

The fun, laughter, joy, and happiness he gives to his family and to others;

His love of life;

His patience and his honesty;

And his contentment with what he has.

            Holger Carl Jorgensen, aged 91 years, passed away unexpectedly on December 11, 2021. He died peacefully at his home in Grand Junction, surrounded by family.

Holger was born and raised in Nebraska. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea. In Grand Island he met and married the love of his life, Rita, together moving to San Diego to raise a family. He originally retired from a career as a civil servant for the federal government, later picking up a hobby job as a courier delivering payroll, before ultimately retiring permanently with Rita to Grand Junction. The couple spent many wonderful years traveling to each of the 50 states, several Canadian provinces, and Mexico, Denmark, & Germany. Holger remained a devoted husband to Rita throughout her illness, lovingly caring for her until her death in 2014.

Additionally, to Rita, Holger was preceded in death by daughter Denise, brothers Otto & Robert, and numerous brothers- & sisters-in-law. He is survived by siblings George, Anne, John and their families, as well as children Gary, Kevin, Mike, & Charisse, their spouses & partners, 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren (with number 8 due to arrive in August).

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying “goodbye” so hard.
