DUNFIELD, Hiram A. “Hy” Kalamazoo passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, June 15, 2016 surrounded by his family at Borgess Gardens. Hy was born June 14, 1933 in Kalamazoo the son of Ivan and Frances (Kitzmiller) Dunfield. He was one of eight children.

He was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1951. Hy was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He worked at KVP Sutherland (James River and Brown Company) in many capacities. He also worked for General Motors at American Axle division in Three Rivers. Hy came from a long line of firemen and he carried on the tradition.

He retired from the Township of Kalamazoo in 1995 after serving as the Lakewood Fire Chief. Prior to that, he was the Northwood Fire Chief and a volunteer fireman for the Eastwood, Lakewood, and Comstock fire departments for most of his life. He was a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed watching the University of Michigan. Hy enjoyed hunting, bowling, golf, and line dancing. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Sarah Jane in 1989. He was also preceded in death his brothers, Leroy, Ray, and Don; and sister, Sue. Hy is survived by his loving companion of 25 years, Judy Buckhout; daughter, Ava (Tim) Green; grandchildren, Ryan (Michelle) Green, Jessica (Adam) McGuire, Bret Green, Amanda (Sean) Keigher; 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother and sisters, Bob Dunfield, Kay Dunfield, Bonnie Stacy; and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
