Herold Treibs
Herold Albert Treibs, 84, of Idaho Falls passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2014, under the care of the Good Samaritan Village and Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
On November 29, 1929, Herold was born to Albert Edward Treibs and Henriette Margaret Itz Treibs in Fredericksburg, Texas. As a young child, Herold loved to read and learn and loved nature, especially hiking and mountain climbing. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1947 as Valedictorian. With a scholarship to Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, he graduated with Honors in 1951 with a degree in chemistry.
Throughout his life, Herold was known as a very competent and hard worker. His first job was with the US Air Force, as a civilian instructor in electricity and electronics at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. In 1952 he moved to Richland, Washington, to work for General Electric Company at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation. Herold worked as an environmental radiochemist and later as a manager of analytical chemistry. While at Hanford, he worked for Battelle and then The Westinghouse Hanford Company. In 1987 he moved to Idaho Falls to work for Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Company on the Special Isotope Separation Project and other laboratory design projects. He retired in 1995.
Herold was a member of the Pacific Northwest Key Council as an amateur mycologist and was regarded as an expert in identifying mushrooms. The Key Council develops and field tests keys to selected species and genera of mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. Herold was also a member of the American Academy of Applied Science and a 50 year member of the American Chemical Society.
In 1956, Herold married Beverly Dutton (from Middlebury, Vermont) in Richland, Washington. They made their home in Washington for many years, raising their two children. Their family enjoyed hiking, camping, skiing, and exploring the beautiful mountains of Washington and northern Idaho. When Herold moved to Idaho, he found a new love exploring the Island Park area, Yellowstone National Park, and other beautiful local places.
Herold loved to help others.
