Herbert J. Kreitner, 84, of Newington, CT, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2015. He was born in New Britain, CT on June 17, 1931, the beloved only child of the late Bartholomaus and Mary (Obermeier) Kreitner. Herbert graduated from New Britain High School and earned his BA in Education from Teachers College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University). He began his teaching career in the Army where he taught English in South Korea shortly after the Korean Conflict. Herbert continued his education at Columbia University where he earned his M.Ed. and returned to his alma mater, New Britain High School to teach social studies for the next 35 years. During most of those years he served as chairperson of the social studies department and worked tirelessly to improve his teaching and the lives of his fellow teachers. He continued his studies and obtained his 7th graduate year, and was very active in the New Britain Teachers’ Union and Retired Teachers’ Association where he served as president. In his spare time, he loved to be fishing, duck hunting and playing cards with friends, or cruising the high seas with his wife of 57 years, Margaret. He was also an avid tropical fish hobbyist. Herbert loved, and took great pride in his family. During retirement he turned his attention to researching and writing his family’s history. He gathered old photos and written correspondences, conducted personal interviews and did extensive research to create a remarkable written legacy that will be with us forever. Herbert leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret and their two children; Betsy and her husband, George McLane of South Burlington, VT, and David Kreitner and his wife Barbara of West Hartford, CT. He also leaves his three grandchildren Katie, Kyle and Amanda.
