Herbert E. Bledsoe, 69, of Independence, died on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at his home.

Herbert was born December 8, 1946, in Lynchburg, VA, a son of the late Lucian Milan and Dorothy Lorraine (Stinnett) Bledsoe.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 20 years as an air traffic controller. Herbert retired in 2010 after working with the University Police Department for 23 years; he was an Interim Pastor for the Independence Baptist Church and a Pastor of Belington Baptist Church He taught intro microcomputers at MTEC, worked with RDVIC in Morgantown, helped establish MECCA and wrote several pamphlets on Domestic Violence. Herbert enjoyed his time at the beach with his wife and family; he enjoyed archery, hunting and was an avid fisherman who liked to fly and surf fish. He also enjoyed golfing at the Preston County Country Club with the seniors on Tuesdays.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kathy (Auvil) Bledsoe; one daughter and spouse, Monica L. and Shawn Mathes of Sheboygan, WI; grandchildren, Alyssa, Marrisa and Nakita Mathes; great-grandson Zander; one brother and spouse, Lucian S. and Jeanie Bledsoe of Faber, VA; two sisters and spouse, JoAnn Bledsoe of St. Augustine, FL, Debra (Bledsoe) and Mac Parker of Richmond, VA; one niece, Kim Bledsoe and partner, Sherry Collett; great-nieces, Teresa and Emily Trencher; great-great niece and nephew, Victoria and Christopher Vetter; nephew, Kevin Bledsoe; great niece and nephew, Paris Claudio and Parker Bledsoe; mother-in-law, Mary Auvil of Independence; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and JoAnna Auvil Jr. of Gladesville; niece, Christina Auvil; great-niece Maddelyn Downey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Howard Auvil Sr.; aunt and uncle, Harold and Mamie Miller.
