An old Soldier died today, Henry “Hank” Vorwald age 92, of DeMotte, IN formerly of Crown Point and Gary, IN passed away on January 23, 2011. He was born on June 24, 1918 in Granite City, IL to Johannah (Nebe) and Casper J. Vorwald, both deceased. He married Mary Catherine Young of East Chicago, IN on March 7, 1942 she passed away February 4, 2008.

Hanks family arrived in Gary 1928 when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Lew Wallace High School Class of 1936 and attended Gary College. He was employed at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. and US Steel. In 1953 he joined his uncle in the automotive business in Whiting, IN.

Hank proudly served in the US Army in WWII in Europe with the Famous First Infantry Division “The Big Red One” from D-Day to end over 30 days of front line combat. Wounded twice and awarded the Purple Heart, ETO with 5 stars, Bronze Star and many more awards. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Military Order of Purple Heart, Battle of The Bulge, Life member of First Div. Infantry Society. Hank never talked freely of his war exploits, but was deeply proud of the military and his service.

Survived by his son, William (Rae) Vorwald, DeFuniak Springs, FLA; Daughter, Susan (Charles Shoemake) Vorwald, Leslie, Arkansas; Brother, William (Thelma) Vorwald, Valparaiso, IN. Preceded in death by his parents, Wife Mary Catherine, Brother Dr. James Vorwald, Sister Margaret Hoffman.
