HENRY “DON” FUNKAUGUST 7, 1933 to SEPTEMBER 11, 2015New Buffalo – Henry D. Funk, 82, of New Buffalo, MI, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at St. Anthony Hospice of Michigan City, IN.Henry “Don” Funk was born August 7, 1933, in Chicago, IL, to Henry “Hank” and Katherine (Kraus) Funk.
Henry was a graduate of Dowagiac High School. He proudly served his country as a US Naval Boatswain during the Korean War and was a “Plank Holder” aboard the USS Forrestal. He worked for Tyler’s, Studebaker, and served in law enforcement for five years with the Cass County Sheriff and the Dowagiac Police Departments. He retired from Bethlehem Steel after 30 years of service in 1995. On August 9, 1955, he married the love of his life, Arlene “Sis” Florence Hokanson, in Elizabeth City, NC. Henry was known for being gregarious, charming and quick-witted.
He was an avid woodworker, crossword puzzle enthusiast, and Cubs, Bears and Notre Dame fan.Henry is survived by his sons, Donald of New Buffalo, David (Hannah) of Arlington, VA, and Douglas (Kathy) of Flushing, MI; and daughter, Karen (Jaime) Serensits of Hanover, PA. He was blessed with five wonderful grandchildren, Amanda, Audrey, Adam, Jack and Peter; one great-grandchild, Carter; and many nieces and nephews, including Kathy (Rockwell) Collins who was like a second daughter to him. He is also survived by Marlene Riggs, his “girl” and “sweetheart”; his beloved sister-in-law, Barbara Rockwell; and best friend, Mort Riggs.
Preceding him in death was his beloved wife of 52 years, Arlene; parents, Henry and Katherine; and a daughter, Karen Marie Funk. Henry was a hero to his loved ones and will be dearly missed.
