Helene Marie Stutsman, 92 of Paradise Valley, AZ passed away August 10. 2011. Helene was the middle child of Tom and Helen Kennedy Reed. She had an older brother Tom and younger brother John Jack Reed. At the age of 14, she transferred to a new school, and added the e to her name, going from Helen to Helene. She graduated high school with honors, and continued her education at Pierce College, where she trained as an executive secretary. When Worl War II broke out, she joined the Navy, and trained as a meterologist. She was assigned to the war room in Washington DC, and decripted the weather portion of intercepted Japanese messages. Even her immediate supervisor did not have the necessary clearance to know what her work was. While in Washington, she met and married Lt. Robert E Stutsman. The family made many moves with the Navy, and eventually settled in Paradise Valley.
After her children were raised, she returned to college, eventually obtaining a PHD from Arizona State University.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, and her brothers. She is survived by her children Robert, John, Reed, Peter and David, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. As matriarch of her family she will be missed.
