Helene Scheidt, nee Fessel, age 79, of Park Ridge, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Lutheran General Hospital.

Helene moved to Park Ridge to raise her family in 1965. She immigrated from Austria in 1951 following a tumultuous childhood in war-era central Europe. Born in Hettin, Yugoslavia, in 1937, to German parents, Helene identified primarily with her Swabian roots. She was proud to have graduated from high school in the United States.

Helene was united in marriage to Fred, on May, 15 1964. Within a year, she had given birth to Christine, who would be her only child. Helene busied herself primarily as a homemaker, returning to part-time work in her daughter’s late adolescence.

Helene was at her happiest when acting as a loving and selfless grandmother–or Oma–to her three grandchildren. She derived joy from baking and sharing her delicious sweets with all those lucky enough to have held a place in her life. Cookie tins replete with her famous “chocolate chips” made their way around the country, borne by those who wished to share her abundant love. No two batches were the same, as measurements had no place among her piles of recipes. She was a natural and infatigable caregiver who sacrificed her own well-being for the betterment and convenience of others. She was a beacon of light, even in times of considerable darkness. Helene should be remembered for her impeccable kindness, as well as her commitment to friends, family, and all those in need.

Preceded in death by her parents, Johann and Elisabeth, Helene is survived by her husband Fred; sister Frances; daughter Christine; son-in-law John; granddaughter Katherine; grandsons Michael and Alexander; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Thanks to our many family, friends and neighbors for their kindness and prayers.
