Helen M. “Peggy” (Gordon) Wickstrom, 82, of Upton and formerly of Medway, died Saturday, February 19, 2011, in the Blaire House of Milford after an illness.
Born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Bennett F. and Elizabeth (McCarthy) Gordon, she was a 1947 graduate of Worcester North High School and began her career working at Woodbury & Co. in Worcester. She lived in Medway for over 30 years before coming to Upton in 1996.
Secretary of the Francis J. Burke Elementary School in Medway for many years, she was very active in Medway town affairs, serving as secretary of the Medway Planning Board and Board of Health, summer recreation director for the Parks Department for 20 years, and the first woman chair of the Medway Good Government Association. Following her retirement from Medway Public Schools, she worked for Town & Country Mortgage in Millis.
Peggy was active in Girl Scouts all her life. She spent summers in Dennis, where she was an active participant in the Tuesday library craft group, and was a regular at the Upton Senior Center Thursday knitting group.
A proud Army mother, she leaves one son, Maj. Gen. Steven N. Wickstrom and his wife Collette of Upton; one daughter, Jeanette Wickstrom of Boston; and two grandsons, Zachary and Brock Wickstrom of Upton. She was also the sister of the late Robert and David Gordon and Betty Brandie.
