Helen M. Lafferty (nee Hopfel) of Silver Ridge Park East section of Berkeley Twp., NJ, formerly of Normandy Beach, NJ and Plainfield, NJ passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014. She was 84 years old. Born on May 4, 1929 in Scotch Plains, NJ, she attended Holy Trinity Grammar School and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Westfield, NJ with an honors to receive a Nursing Scholarship.
Helen worked proudly as the Secretary to the Mayor of Plainfield for two terms. She was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp and was a member of the Rosary Altar Society, the Franciscan Friars and, for a short period of time, was a Eucharistic Minister at the church. She also enjoyed taking trips. Helen loved being around family, believing that “family comes first”. She had a hearty, “Hopfel” laugh and always had a cheerful welcome and interest in conversation with everyone that crossed her path. She was strong willed and enjoyed helping those in need and the simple natures of life.
Her favorite song and motto was, “I Did It My Way”. Helen was predeceased by her husband Bernard in 2006. She is survived by her son and daughter in law William & Janet Lafferty of Normandy Beach, NJ, three daughters and a son in law Mary Anne Lafferty of Bayville, Maureen and Robert Kaufmann of Ocean Gate, NJ & Eileen Lafferty of Toms River, two grandchildren David W. Gindel and his fiancée Camila & Kelly May Johnson and her husband Christopher, and one great grandchild Justin A. Gindel. She is also survived by her niece Kathleen McShea of Basking Ridge and several other nieces and nephews.
