Helen E. Deranek, 87, of Martin Lane in South Bend, IN, passed away at 5:00am Sunday, May 14, 2006 in Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, following an illness.
She was born on September 17, 1918 to the late Albert and Anna (Kurej) Kundek in Chicago, IL, and has lived in South Bend, since the age of 12. Along with her parents, one infant son, Dennis Deranek also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Deranek retired in 1983 from the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Notre Dame, after 19 years of employment. Prior to that, she had worked at the Studebaker Corporation.
On October 19, 1945, as Helen E. Kundek, she married Henry G. Deranek in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend, IN. He survives.
Along with her husband Henry, of 60 years, she is survived by one daughter, Margaret Ann “Peg” (husband Gary)Swink of Lansdale, PA; two sons, Michael H. Deranek of Rochester Hills, MI; James A. Deranek of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, Aaron Swink, Ian Swink, Lea Swink, Michael Stock, Larry Deranek; two great grandchildren, Mira Stock, Zachary Christian Stock; and three sisters, Ann Uckotter of Fort Mitchell, KY; Mary Morey of Mishawaka, IN; and Irene Moss of Mishawaka, IN.
Mrs. Deranek was a member of Sacred Heart Parish at the University of Notre Dame, where she volunteered visiting sick and homebound people. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Memorial Hospital on Sunday mornings. Helen graduated from both South Bend Central High School and South Bend Business College.
