Newark – Hazel Cunningham Smith, 90 of Peirson Avenue died Wednesday, January 1, 2003 at the Fairport Baptist Home.

Mrs. Smith was born the daughter of Henry and Luella Coleman Schwartz on November 7, 1912 in Arcadia. She graduated from Newark High School in 1930, and then was employed for two years in the office of the Newark Union Gazette and eight years in the office of the Newark Courier, now the Newark Courier Gazette. In July of 1940 she accepted a position as medical secretary at the Newark State School now Newark Developmental Center. Mrs. Smith continued there for 32 years retiring in November of 1972 as Principal Stenographer. She served the last 15 years as the secretary to the Director.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newark. She had served on the Advisory Board for the Fairport Baptist Home. She was also a member of Amitie Chapter #473, O.E.S.
Mrs. Smith is survived by many nieces and nephews including Betty Austin of Newark, Ronald Austin of TX., Dorothy Frank of Newark, George Schwartz of Newark, Melvin Schwartz of CT. and Richard Swartz of Rochester; several great nieces and great nephews including Tim Schwartz of Japan; Step-daughter Joan (Gerry) Crider of Newark; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her first husband Lawrence M. Cunningham of Williamson in 1984 and her second husband Earl M. Smith of Palmyra in 1999.
