Harriet D. Powell Gordon, 81, of East Orange, NJ transitioned from this life to her heavenly home on Saturday March 7, 2015. She was born in Nash County, NC on March 3, 1934 to the late Benjamin and Mary E. Powell.
Harriet joined Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age. She was baptized by Rev. R. S. Riddick in Whitakers, NC. Harriet remained faithful until she came to New Jersey. She then joined Peaceful Zion Baptist Church and remained faithful until God called her home.
Harriet attended public school in North Carolina, as well as New Jersey. She attended New Jersey City University and taught elementary school for a number of years. She married the late Cleveland A. Gordon, Sr. in 1957.
She is survived by three children, Winifred G. Gordon, Cleveland A. Gordon, Jr., and Jennifer Y. Gordon; seven grandchildren, Qu’wan Gordon, Tamika Caraway, Cory Gordon, Yovonne Gordon, Uvonne Gordon, Nyesha Johnson and Naketa Johnson; eight great grandchildren, Quadasiah Gordon, Qua’Yana Gordon, Qu’Ran Gordon, Yana’e Harrington, Amari Gordon, Alani Gordon, Aylei Gordon, and Meliah Morris; two sisters, Gwendolyn Garrett (Gordon) of Orange NJ, and Shirley McLeod (Hubert) of Cross, SC; one brother, Benjamin Powell Jr. (Mary) of Irvington, NJ; one sister-in-law, Zena Powell of Rocky Mount, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
