Harold Matthew Moore, age 93, passed away at his residence Monday morning. Born in Wake County, he was one of fifteen children born to the late Richard Moore and the late Flora Fellers Moore. Mr. Moore was a member of the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witnesses and worked with Waste Industries for many years. Harold was liked and loved by everyone whose life he touched.
Harold is survived by his wife, Mary Yelverton Moore; his children, Kathryn Moore, Kelvin (Annette) Artis, Tashlin Dixon and Patrick Dixon; a sister, Grace Elizabeth Moore; his grandchildren, Denise Moore, Mia Moore, Desmond Crockett Moore, Kiandria Dixon and Yasmine Artis; his great grandchildren, DeJah Moore and Xamia Applewhite; along with a host of other family members he loved dearly.
HIS-STORY
LIFE JOURNEY OF HAROLD M. MOORE
On June 25, 1928, Harold Matthew Moore was the eighth child born of fifteen children to the late Richard Baxter Moore and Flora Jane Fellers (Kate).
Although Harold received less than a high school education, his intelligence and whit, along with the life lessons and trades he learned from his father proved to be invaluable. Harold loved his father tremendously and spoke good things about him every chance he got. He loved to be outdoors tinkering, doing yard work and tending to the garden. He was an amazing story teller. Harold had many hobbies but the few that come to mind are hunting, riding his Goldwing across country, collecting guns, singing, watching westerns, and most of all, traveling and sharing quality time with his family.
At a very tender age between sixteen and seventeen, he met his first love.
During his younger years, he traveled with Sam Cooke as a backup singer, and was also a member of a gospel group named “The Bible Tones”. He had the privilege of sparring with Muhammed Ali as his son Kenneth trained to be a light weight boxer. After missing milestones over time, Harold grew tired of being away from his family and decided to spend more time at home. His wife encouraged him to start bible study. On August 4, 1953, Harold was baptized and became a loyal servant of Jehovah where they both served together. After many years in Boston, and their children completing school, it was decided to return to North Carolina. He sold some of his properties and built a home in Princeton NC where he continued his journey. In 1975, he came to North Carolina and got a job at Strickland Lumber where he drove the Boone truck for many years and then drove for waste management until retirement.
Decades of trials and tribulations tested the faith and strength of his family. One evening while the family was asleep, they were awaken by flames and smoke where the house had caught fire. The heroic actions of Harold saved the young family of five. Heartbreaking adversity continued to test his loyalty and devotion. He lost his son Dennis in November 1970. He lost his son Kenneth November 1985. Losing his wife almost killed him August 1991. After all of that, he was able to catch a second wind and married Mary Yelverton in December 1991 where he gained three bonus sons and their families. Harold survived a cancer that most would not have survived. His current wife had a near fatal car accident and he nursed her back to health. After which, he then lost his grandson Kenneth L Moore in June 2002. Each year, the family grew smaller. Significant loss continued when siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends passed away leaving only himself and one sister. Through it all Harold stayed faithful and committed to serving his Father with displayed strength only Jehovah could provide.
Our beloved Harold Moore has fought a good fight and he has been nothing less than an amazing human being. His courage, devotion, charming personality, strength, and a tad bit of that Moore stubbornness will always be remembered. The unconditional love he displayed for his entire family and how it was and continues to be reciprocated is evidence of one phenomenal man who will forever hold a special place in each of our hearts.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Willie M. Moore, his two sons Kenneth M. Moore, Dennis M. Moore, grandson Kenneth L. Moore. He is survived by his daughter, Kathyrn D. Moore, grandchildren, Denise R Moore, Mia J. Moore, Desmond Crockett-Moore, Faith Moore-Boswell (Ty), great-grand children DeJah R Moore, Charde Fenner, Chase and Ty Boswell, Jasmine Rodriguez, one sister Grace Elizabeth Moore, current wife of 30 years, Mary Yelverton Moore, three bonus sons and family, Kelvin Artis (Annette), Patrick Dixon, Tashlin Dixon, Yasmine Artis, Kiandria Dixon, Xamia Applewhite and a host of other great-grands, nieces, nephews and other family members across the country.
More often than not, the question would be asked; “How is PaPa? How is Mr. Moore? How is Uncle Harold? How is Honey? How is your dad? How is your grandfather?” The answer to ALL of those questions is that He is well loved and at peace!
