On June 7, 1937, Alvin Leon and Mildred Mathews McCoy were celebrating the arrival of their son Harold Mathews McCoy. As he grew older, he would come to be known to all as “Buddy”. Harold was educated first in the Meriwether County Schools. Like so many others young people who had been born in the rural areas of Georgia, Buddy knew there were opportunities outside of life on the farm. He found his opportunity in nearby Newnan. He also was typical of his generation in that work skills were learned on the job. He also met a young lady from Carroll County, Zelda Pierce and they were married on May 24, 1958. He joined International Playtex, one of the burgeoning new companies in Newnan. He was associated with the company for 45 years. Buddy and Zelda were deeply committed to Unity Baptist Church. He had served as a deacon and took a great part in the church’s annual barbecues, mission trips and working in the church booth at Powers’ Crossroads Festival. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly McCoy Burch. He is survived by his devoted wife Zelda; his son Harold McCoy, Jr. and his wife Rosemary. He was grandfather to Megan Hinckley and her husband Josh; Macy Carscallen and her husband Chase, Addison Burch and Ryann Burch. Also surviving is his brother Johnny McCoy and his wife Betty.
